Blackout shutters fitted in a bay window in a bedroom

Blackout shutters for a darker bedroom

Our Shutter & Shade fits a honeycomb blind behind the shutter, so far less light bleeds through the frame and slats. Close both and the room goes as dark as you need.

Who blackout shutters are made for

Shutters block out most of the sun, but some light still bleeds round the frame and between the slats. Shutter & Shade deals with that by fitting a honeycomb blind behind the shutter. Pull the blind down, close the louvres, and the room goes as dark as you want it.

That helps shift workers who sleep in the day, babies and children who nap, and anyone who wakes at first light. It suits a home cinema too. Shutter & Shade comes in our Seattle and Montana ranges, and we measure and make it to fit your window.

  • Sleep in the day

Shift workers can close the room up and sleep through a bright afternoon.

  • Darker naps

A darker nursery helps with naps and early bedtimes for babies and young children.

  • A blind behind the shutter

The honeycomb blind sits behind the panels and cuts the light that bleeds through the frame and slats.

Questions about blackout shutters

What are blackout shutters?

Our blackout option is called Shutter & Shade: a honeycomb blind fitted behind the shutter. The shutters give you privacy and light control in the day, and the blind cuts out the light that gets past them at night.

Why add a blind if shutters already block the light?

Shutters block most of the sun, but some light bleeds through the framing and between the slats. The honeycomb blind behind them cuts that light bleed, so you can make the room as dark as you need.

Will they help a shift worker sleep in the day?

Yes. Close the shutters and pull the blind down, and the daylight stays out, so shift workers and night workers can get proper rest during the day.

Can they go in a nursery or child's room?

Yes. They suit nurseries and children's bedrooms well. A darker room helps with daytime naps, bedtime routines and those light summer evenings when nobody wants to settle.

Which ranges can I have them in?

Shutter & Shade is made in our Seattle and Montana ranges. Seattle is our most popular choice and the affordable option. Montana is premium hardwood in a choice of 41 stains and painted colours.

Can you fit them on big windows?

Yes. We make them to measure for large bedroom windows, bay windows and floor-to-ceiling glass. Each one is sized to its window, which keeps light gaps to a minimum.

Are they better than blackout curtains?

Many people prefer them. Shutters last longer, give you finer control of the light in the day and look tidier than a heavy curtain. The blind does the blacking out at night.
